Damien Norman  took out the under 16s title.

The contest was run under a slightly different format from normal.

All surfers competing surfed in 4 different heats during the day.
Only the highest scoring ride from each surfer from each heat is counted.

At the end of the day the highest total of scores is the winner.

Damien Norman secured his win with scores 8.1, 5.3 and 9.1

Jack Freestone blitzed the field with  a lowest score of 8.1 and a high 9.1.
Jack was lucky that Ice Perriara didnt have any luck in his second heat where he only scored a 4.6 . his other 2 waves an 8.3, 8.8 and the highest score of the day an almost perfect 9.9.

The standard of surfing was extremely high all day…………….
Dont be surprised if you see some of the names below on the WCT tour in the next few years.

Several clubs have emerged  from the pack as contenders to take out the title, they are Noosa, North End, Kirra Surfriders, LeBa,Snapper and Werri.

The waves were a bit smaller today but the action was still top level.

The Duranbah Boardriders were in Party mode, tucked away in the corner of the beach working hard on theyre strict training program of beer bongs and sand wrestling with unsuspecting passers by…Hilarious!!!

Every year Curl Curl seem to come up with something crazy to spur their team on.

This year it looked as though they didnt have anyhing for us…..

Andrew Peard from Curl Curl… his choice of Surf Wear didnt seem to upset his surfing.

That is until Curl Curl club stalwart Andrew Peard appeared ready for his heat dressed in a G-string Bikini!!
Apparently it was his Buck’s night and in true Aussie (and Curl Curl ) tradition, his team mates decided that he should surf in a g-string!!
I dont know if  Peard is a greek name, but man he’s a hairy bastard!!

The conditions were perfect , with kegs all over the beach especially in the afternoon when the wind wasoffshore and the tide was low.

Incredible surfing took place on the first day.

the first duel of the morning was the heat with former Oz champ Nic Vasecek and Leba’s Stu Kennedy.

Also later in the day Dan Pryor of Snapper rocks Surfriders almost caused an upset when with less than a minute to go and Owen Wright pulled a high score from no where to take home first place.

Its early days but several clubs are looking strong..

Especially Leba and the host club Kirra

There were perfect beachbreak peaks everywhere you looked.

And grommetts flying through the air and getting shacked over and over again.

The winner will be anounced at the presentation on Sunday for the Rip Curl Kirra teams Challenge.

Michael Peterson & Mick Fanning Rising Star Challenge

Rules:

Heats will be 10 Minutes duration with a 3 minute paddle out.

Competitors can catch a maximum of 3 waves in each heat and once you have caught 3 waves you must return to the beach.

Each competitor will surf 4 rounds and only your highest scoring wave in each round will count in your total.

The winner will be decided by the highest aggregate total from each of the 4 rounds.

In the event of a tie the winner will be decided by the next highest scoring wave in any round.  If still tied the 3rd, 4th etc waves will be counted.

The scores from Round 4 will be withheld until the presentation at 3.00pm on Sunday 22nd February at Rainbow Bay Surf Club.

Normal competition rules regarding interference etc will be as per Surfing Australia – Australasian Rule Book.

Prizes:

Surfboards and trophies for winners in each division.
Packs and trophies for runners-up and third in each division.

Today in the Billabong Pro Junior at Coffs Harbour, Jack was on fire and scored the highest scoring wave of the day. 9.5 well done Jack.

The Kirra Teams Challenge is only a week away.
Rod Steeles rang me last night  to let me know that LeBa is coming up to kick some arse….

With Melling and Stu Kennedy on their team and in red hot form, they will be one to watch.

The Snapper boys will also be keen to make amends for the loss suffered by their A, B, C, D, E and F teams in the Jim Beam tag event…… Its been a while since theyve taken home the winners cheque.

Corey Ziems who has had a miraculous recovery from a back breaking wave at Pipeline only a few months ago. After being told he was out of the water for a long time… Corey has bounced back !!

Jack Freestone, at 16 years old this is a huge feather in his cap, and he’s been full of surprises and results lately. Jack’s reputation is growing every time he hit’s the water. And a berth in the trials will only push his rep further.

Dale Richards Quiky Pro 2007
