The waves were about 6ft with a few sets breaking outside.

Damien Chaudoy was unlucky to get a third in his heat and Jesse Allan scored a smoking tube in his heat but unfortunately Blake Ainsworth from Snapper came back in the dying minutes to relegate him to second place.

As usual Mick is ripping and looking super fit…

But now has his work cut out for him after Parko has taken out the first 2 events of the year.

The Billabong Pro at Chopes in Tahiti starts in the next week or so. It will be interesting to see what the artings are like after that.

Steph took out the Quiky Pro yesterday, she was looking polished, relaxed and well……..unbeatable!!. maybe they should give her the world title now…..

Melanie Bartels was the other finalist, she got there with power and style. This girl really loves to over power the waves with big carves, great to watch.

All the other girls are playing catch up already…

Unfortunately for Kelly his start to the year was pretty much the opposite.  Kelly Slater got smashed by wildcard Julian Wilson in the 3rd round.

And as you would expect  he was not happy about it…

Corey Ziems as I said in the last news post was the Kirra Surfriders member who won the trials and is now in the main event.

Corey didnt have much luck in his first heat on Saturday with Taj Burrows and Dane Reynolds .
When the contest starts again his first heat man on man is against Parko.
Parko and Corey are sparring partners from way back . And although you’d be hard pressed to find someone who would tip Corey for the win. Its impossible to rule him out , with the form he’s been in.

One of the great things about Pro surfing these days , is the ability to watch it anywhere you can get the internet.

Damien Norman  took out the under 16s title.

The contest was run under a slightly different format from normal.

All surfers competing surfed in 4 different heats during the day.
Only the highest scoring ride from each surfer from each heat is counted.

At the end of the day the highest total of scores is the winner.

Damien Norman secured his win with scores 8.1, 5.3 and 9.1

Jack Freestone blitzed the field with  a lowest score of 8.1 and a high 9.1.
Jack was lucky that Ice Perriara didnt have any luck in his second heat where he only scored a 4.6 . his other 2 waves an 8.3, 8.8 and the highest score of the day an almost perfect 9.9.

The standard of surfing was extremely high all day…………….
Dont be surprised if you see some of the names below on the WCT tour in the next few years.

Several clubs have emerged  from the pack as contenders to take out the title, they are Noosa, North End, Kirra Surfriders, LeBa,Snapper and Werri.

The waves were a bit smaller today but the action was still top level.

The Duranbah Boardriders were in Party mode, tucked away in the corner of the beach working hard on theyre strict training program of beer bongs and sand wrestling with unsuspecting passers by…Hilarious!!!

Every year Curl Curl seem to come up with something crazy to spur their team on.

This year it looked as though they didnt have anyhing for us…..

Andrew Peard from Curl Curl… his choice of Surf Wear didnt seem to upset his surfing.

That is until Curl Curl club stalwart Andrew Peard appeared ready for his heat dressed in a G-string Bikini!!
Apparently it was his Buck’s night and in true Aussie (and Curl Curl ) tradition, his team mates decided that he should surf in a g-string!!
I dont know if  Peard is a greek name, but man he’s a hairy bastard!!

The waves were 4-5 ft with shifting peaks everywhere. So there was a bit of luck involved in catching a good one.

Pete Fanning scored the first barrel of the day, won his heat and didnt stop grinning for the rest of the day…

The standard of surfing was exceptionally high all day…Davo was looking polished, Corey is ripping and looks super fit (which is probably why he recovered from a broken back so quick!) . Mitch Duggan, Cliffy, Matt Hurworth were all surfing well.

And Mick……well……………………….. Mick surfed like a World Champion!!

The final turned out to be a duel between Mick Fanning and Asher Pacey, Which is pretty cool considering Mick is the Pro-competitor and Asher the proffesional free surfer.

They sat off the wall and matched each other wave for wave and manouvre for manouvre.
It was real close but Mick took home the bacon for the 3rd year in a row.
Because Mick has WCT commitments, Asher now becomes the surfer to represent Kirra Surfriders in the Jim Beam Surftag National Final (Narrabeen): 14th Mar 2009

New junior club member  Jesse Allen  was stoked with his 3rd place and $250 for being the highest placed junior.

Jesse and Mitch Hayes who came 3rd and fourth respectively took the option of surfing the larger peaks in the middle of the beach ..but it didnt pay off.

Over all it was another great day for KSC at the beach and showed the depth of surfing talent in our club.

Special thanks to Sheehany (Contest Director), Pritamo (head Judge), Jenny (food) and Poppy for getting SHIT organised and every one else who was there pitching in on the day.
